Turmuligheder

Dagstur til Nisyros Island, Volcano og Nikia Village

Rejseplan

45 min

45 min

great day out to Nisyros

Went on a day trip to the volcanic island of Nisyros. Gorgeous. Bus collected us at hotel gate and we went to Kardemena (lovely resort with a sandy beach) where we got a one hour cruise to Nisyros. Bus onthe island took up up to the top of a mountain with spectacular views. ~Then we went to the caldera of the volcano. Entry fee E5. From there we went to a hilltop town called Nikia. We went into a lovely little cafe there called Locanda Andriotis. Owned by a very nice couple, the views from the terrace are stunning. Great coffee and the best carrot cake ever.(Norwegian family recipe). We then went down to the lovely harbour town of Mandraki. We had food there in a square in front of the sea. Great value for money. Back to the boat and cruise to Kardemena and bus to hotel. Very good value for money and would recommend this tour.

Nisyros – More Than Just a Volcano

If you're considering visiting Nisyros, do it. It was easily one of the highlights of our holiday. Most people visit for the volcano, and rightly so. Standing inside Stefanos Crater is an incredible experience. The sulphur smell is only really noticeable once you reach the crater itself, not throughout the island as some visitors expect. It's definitely there, but nowhere near as overwhelming as many people imagine. What surprised us more was the heat. Standing inside the crater, you can actually feel warmth through the soles of your shoes. The yellow staining across the crater floor is sulphur deposited by escaping volcanic gases, a constant reminder that this volcano is still very much alive. One piece of advice: don't touch the steam vents. We watched another visitor reach towards one, seemingly forgetting that the steam is being heated by volcanic activity beneath the surface. The warning signs are there for a reason. The information boards also explain that if Nisyros erupts again, it is more likely to be through a gas or steam explosion than a dramatic lava flow, which makes standing in the crater feel even more surreal. Beyond the volcano, however, the true heart of Nisyros is its people. The villages are absolutely beautiful. Narrow stone alleyways weave between traditional houses, hidden archways open into tiny courtyards, and every corner seems to reveal another view of the sea, the castle above, or a beautifully maintained home filled with flowers and character. Unlike some Greek islands that can feel overly commercialised, Nisyros feels authentic, lived-in and loved. What stood out most was the pride the local people have in their island. Everyone we met was kind, welcoming and genuinely passionate about sharing their home. Whether explaining the volcano, recommending local dishes, sharing island history or helping visitors find their way, there was a warmth and authenticity that made us feel genuinely welcome. The food was another highlight. Make sure you try: • The cinnamon syrup. • The almond syrup. • The tomato jam, which sounds unusual but is absolutely delicious. • The local cheese starters and traditional island dishes. A special mention goes to Koukouzina, which we would highly recommend. The food was fantastic, but more importantly it embodied everything we loved about Nisyros: traditional flavours, genuine hospitality and a sense of local pride that you simply cannot manufacture. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Some of our favourite moments came from chatting with local people whose knowledge, pride and passion for their island turned a simple visit into something far more memorable than we expected. One mystery we still haven't solved is the cave on the road up to the volcano. It's signposted, appears on maps and seems to extend underground. If anyone knows its history or has found any information about it, we'd love to learn more. Nisyros isn't the place to visit if you're looking for nightlife and crowds. It's a place for people who appreciate history, geology, traditional culture, beautiful villages and genuine human kindness. We arrived expecting a volcano. We left talking about the people.

Interesting trip.

No frills trip. Boat journey, bus to crater and return trip. A German tourist guide who was nothing to do with the paid for journey gave us some brief commentary in English which was a bonus. Well worth the trip with no problems encountered.

Nisyros Volcano Trip

Booked this trip whilst staying I. Kos Town. Coach picked us up from the hotel around 8am. Picked up the boat to Nisyros around 9-30am with a 1 hour crossing. We were then met by the guide at 10-30 and walked up to the town centre. We had a drink and a bite to eat before returning to the harbour to get on the coach at 1-30pm to go to the volcano. We had about 50 minutes there (ample) then coach to harbour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the place. Next one hour boat trip back to Kos and then around an hour on the coach back to the hotel. A very well ran and organised trip…. But left a little underwhelmed? Full day for 50 minutes at the volcano.

Really good but very rushed

I really loved this activity. Both the volcano and Nikia village are interesting and beautiful. However, the whole trip felt extremely rushed as we were given only 30 mins to explore each site, yet we then spent 2.5 hrs at the port of Mandraki waitingfor the ferry back. I understand people need to make a living but sitting in a restaurant waiting for a ferry is not the aim of this trip. I would much rather prefer 60 mins at each location instead. If enough time was given I would happily repeat this experience again.

A disappointing experience on the organisational side. The island is well worth a visit though.

Booked the tour from Kardamena on the Sailaway website. Despite being end of September boat was packed, some people could not sit down as no seats left. Terrible conditions, cannot imagine what August is like! No announcement on board, no indication to where was our volcano bus, we had to go and ask some staff on the boat. No one confirmed at what time the boat was leaving the island, people were really confused ... No guide on the bus either, when the tour booked described a "guided tour" the whole thing was very disappointing. Driver could not speak English, the only words he knew were "45 mins" which was the time we had at the volcano and the mountain village. I would not book the bus with hindsight but would rather hire a car or scooter and do all these things freely as the island is small and there are plenty of hire shops where the boats arrive.

Great experience!

Great experience! Nisyros itself and the church on the mountain are very nice to visit and wander around. You can then be taken by tour bus to the foot of volcano. After this you walk 27 meters down and you are in the crater!

Daily prices

We booked a boat trip to Nisyros Island, volcano and back. There was no organization, there were no Representatives of the company on site. Messages were answered very late. No excursion program was provided – no information about what to expect, where to board the bus, etc. We were not satisfied. Tickets for this excursion could also have been bought directly at the port of departure.

Very rushed trip. Not worth it

The main reason for booking this trip was to visit the volcano. On boarding the bus the tour guide spoke mainly German and maybe other languages but only spoke English to say we had arrived in Nikia. Got half an hour which wasn't long enough. Then the volcano, which cost €5 to enter. Although it was to see see the volcano we were only given half an hour again, so you had to rush down and back up if you wanted to go into the crater. Getting back for the boat we had to wait 2 hours for the boat back, time that could be added to the volcano. It would have been nice to hear the information about what we were seeing, not just "you are here". Very disappointed, gave 1 out of 5 for seeing the volcano

Holidays

My partner and I recently stayed at Blue Domes and our experience was excellent from start to finish. Everything was impeccable with stunning sea views and distinctive architecture that makes you feel like you are in paradise. Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean and fully equipped, with a private balcony and a magnificent sunset view. The food was very nice with many restaurants and a wide variety of choices. We highlighted the Greek taverna and the beach bar. The staff was very kind and helpful. The beach and pools were perfect for relaxing and the atmosphere was peaceful and romantic. We will definitely be back and highly recommend it to couples looking for an unforgettable getaway.
