Didn’t realize we would just be trolling the entire trip - rode around until they had a bite and then reeled it in. Very little interaction with the guides, when we got back the older guide stood and demanded a tip, and just handed us the two barracuda we caught. After reading reviews saying the restaurant would cook it for us, we walked up and tried to figure out what to do. Thankfully the very nice owner came out and said the guides normally clean them and cut them into fillets - this was never offered. He also said they were really busy as they were full for the day - but he kindly had the chef prepare us ceviche and 4 fish dinners. Honestly, we wouldn’t do this trip again, the boat ride was rough, it’s just a metal seat, and the lack of any interaction was odd. We would however get a day pass for National Beach Club - the owner, Evan, and his daughter were AMAZING!! His daughter was our waitress, and was hustling around the entire time. We went to leave and I asked her how to get a taxi and she stopped what she was doing, walked outside, down the block and got us a taxi - totally above and beyond!
We weren’t able to go due to the weather, but everyone was very nice and accommodating. Will definitely book again when we come back.
Had a great experience fishing! It was as so much fun and the guides were amazing! It was so yummy getting to eat our catch!
We were really disappointed with this excursion. We booked a private sport fishing charter expecting to have the opportunity to fish, but no one in our group was ever given a fishing rod or the chance to participate. The crew handled everything from start to finish. During the entire trip, we never had a single bite or even saw any sign of fish. The crew never explained what they were trying, what was happening, or why the fishing wasn’t productive. There was very little communication, and they didn’t seem concerned that we never actually got to fish. The excursion description also mentions access to the Nacional Beach Club after the trip, but no one told us about it or gave us any instructions on how to use that benefit. We only found out afterward that it was included. Overall, we left feeling like we missed out on the experience we paid for. If you’re booking this excursion expecting a hands-on fishing trip, you may want to ask in advance exactly how guest participation works and whether you’ll actually have the opportunity to fish.
They worked super hard to get us each fish! Seas were very rough, to be expected. Not for the faint of heart when on a smaller boat with rough seas. We thought it was a blast! They cooked up our catch after with tacos and ceviche which was absolutely amazing!!!!! Caught 3 mackerel, 2 of them were close to 3’ long.
Things you should know before booking: 1. This is not a hands-on fishing excursion in the traditional sense. The crew does the actual fishing, and guests reel the fish in once something is hooked. If that’s the type of experience you’re looking for, you’ll likely enjoy it, because the guys on board were hardworking, friendly, and pleasant to spend time with. 2. Blue water fly fishing was not available during our trip, despite being mentioned on the tour listing and website. Nick explained that it needed to be arranged in advance, but when I tried multiple times beforehand to set that up, I either received no response or was told the day before the trip that it would be “trolling/sport fishing only.” 3. The tour description also mentioned the option to eat the fish afterward at a nearby hotel, but this was never brought up or offered during our trip. At the end of the excursion, we were simply dropped back off at the beach. Overall, the experience itself was pleasant. The crew worked hard, and Nick was enjoyable to talk with. I just wish I had known the details above before booking, as the experience was different from what the listing led me to expect. Hopefully this helps future guests know exactly what kind of excursion they are signing up for.
We had an excellent time with Nick, Ismael, and Andrik. They were so knowledgeable and efficient with what they did. They were very mindful of our time to get back to the cruise ship and made sure to leave us time to enjoy the cooking of our catch, which was masterfully prepared and very delicious. Nick was an outstanding host and guide, and was even more accommodating with the preparation of our catch. 10 out of 10 for the experience, and we would absolutely do this again with them if we ever return.
We booked the three hour fishing trip. Had a great time. Crew worked hard. Boat was clean and all the equipment was in good order. Hooked up 4 times. Landed 2. Had them Prepared at the restaurant on site and it tasted amazing.
Rough seas, 4-6+ft, for most of the trip. Did not hook any fish, only seaweed. After about 3hrs, we abuptly stopped and took a very fast and rough ride back to the beach. Two young kids as guides, so it appears they aren't very knowledgeable of the fish patterns here yet. We're experienced fishermen and women and we understand sometimes you don't catch fish. But we're a little perplexed at their approach to trolling..
Good fishing. Nice captains. Terrible restaurant management with our Catch preparation. If you want to not just fish but to eat your catch - better find someone else. After 2 hours wait, out of 5 fish we caught, they served us 1 fish and said they will keep the rest for their boss because “how can you eat all that fish?” My son was starving as we didn’t have breakfast, he is a big 14yo athlete who can eat a horse. We spent 4 hours fighting with the restaurant staff to have ALL of our catch served to us that we paid for. This was so annoying, unprofessional and unfair and just left a bad taste in our mouths.
Hola Elenas, First off you did not even go on the fishing trip! Our staff let you use a sun lounger and palapa while your son was out fishing for 4 hours. Our loungers are for Hotel & VIP All Inclusive guests only. I feel that the staff was quite accommodating to you in reality. You paid to go fishing. You received an email which states the Beach Club where the boat departs will prepare your catch for 15 USD per person. My staff did say the wait time for preparation this day was longer than usual due to high demand at the beach club. The kitchen also had to wait for the crew to fillet the fish and bring it up to kitchen and grill. So very sorry that you are not comprehensive and did not like the fact that the beach club does indeed charge for preparation and table service which is independent from the fishing tour. You did receive a detailed email weeks before your trip and were then asking last minute about all of the details. Always best to pay attention to the confirmation emails. Also not our fault if you did not wake up early and have breakfast before the fishing tour! Thanks, Evan Mckenzie Costa Maya Sport Fishing Nacional Beach Club & Bungalows
