Looking up from Dali, Cangshan always feels close. But once you step onto the mountain, the experience shifts completely. The altitude, the الهواء, and the perspective all change, turning a simple visit into something more immersive and quiet. Start your day from Dali Old Town around 8:30 or 9:00 AM. The most convenient way to reach Cangshan is by taxi or ride-hailing, which takes about 20 minutes to the cable car stations. There are several access points, but for a classic and relatively easy hiking experience, the Gantong Cableway or Zhonghe Cableway are the most commonly used. They take you directly up to the mid-mountain level, where the main walking routes begin. Taking the cable car is part of the experience. As you ascend, the view gradually opens. Erhai Lake stretches out in the distance, and the town below becomes smaller and quieter. By the time you step off, the air is cooler, fresher, and noticeably calmer. From the upper station, begin your walk along the Jade Belt Road, one of the most iconic trails on Cangshan. The path runs horizontally along the mountainside, making it relatively gentle and accessible. There are no steep climbs, just a steady walk through forest, rock formations, and open viewpoints. The mountain surrounds you, while the lake remains constantly in sight below. As you move along the trail, the rhythm naturally slows. The temperature drops slightly, and the sounds of the city fade away. Every so often, the trees open up to reveal wide views over Erhai, offering a completely different sense of space compared to the lakeside. It feels less like sightseeing and more like stepping into another layer of Dali. Plan to walk for two to three hours at a relaxed pace, stopping whenever the view invites you. There are small rest points along the way where you can sit, take photos, or simply breathe in the mountain air. By early afternoon, begin heading back toward the cable car station and descend. You can return to Dali Old Town for a late lunch or take a short rest before continuing your day. A simple one-day rhythm might be: depart the old town around 8:30 AM, reach the cable car by 9:00, spend the late morning hiking along the Jade Belt Road, and return to the city around 2:00 PM. Before you go, bring a light jacket, as temperatures on the mountain are cooler than in the city. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and it’s a good idea to carry water and some snacks. Weather can change quickly in the mountains, so a quick check before departure is helpful. Cangshan is not about a challenging climb. It’s about perspective. From above, Dali feels quieter, wider, and more connected to the landscape that surrounds it.
What a wonderful experience, one of the best I have done. Liya provided us different options for the hike/walk that suited our skill level, and gave us so much good information as we walked. The views at the top are spectactular! Liya was so friendly and welcoming, cooking us tasty food and she made the whole time so great. I feel I have a new friend in Dali. A+ experience and highly recommended to get a more personal feel of Dali, while getting to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise too.
Dear Phil,I'm so glad to have new friends as you two!
