Rejseplan

Very emotional experience and very heavy on the heart.

This was an emotional experience and very heavy feeling. Foster was an excellent guide and very knowledgeable of the tour and excellent driver might I add. He also gave us a different perspective to look at the opportunities that we have living in America. His background and degree in tourism really stood out on how he described some of the sites we visited. I believe everyone should experience this tour especially blacks from the diaspora.

Amazing Adventure & Experience!!

I had a wonderful experience on this tour and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Ghana. Our driver planned the departure time very well, which allowed us to avoid the heavy traffic leaving and returning to Accra. That planning made the long road trip much smoother and allowed us to maximize our time at the historical sites. The experience at Assin Manso was incredibly moving. Walking barefoot and standing in the ancestral river where so many enslaved Africans took their final bath before being taken to the coast was powerful and emotional. The guide there was exceptional, knowledgeable, patient, and willing to answer every question thoughtfully. The guides at Elmina and Cape Coast castles were equally excellent. They provided deep historical context and guided us through the sites with care and professionalism. Visiting these places is a profound experience, and the guides helped bring the history to life in a meaningful way. We also stopped at Lemon Lounge for lunch, which was fantastic. Their assorted jollof rice may be some of the best in all of Ghana - an amazing meal during a memorable day. The only suggestion I would offer for improvement relates to the vehicle used for the trip. Our car experienced some maintenance issues along the way, which created a few minor interruptions during the journey. That said, I want to give credit to our driver as he handled the situation calmly and professionally and kept the trip moving smoothly despite the challenges. For future tours, using a newer vehicle or SUV better suited for the long highway drive could make an already excellent tour even better. Overall, this was a powerful, memorable, and meaningful day. The guides were outstanding, the sites are deeply important historically, and the experience is one I will never forget.

Blown Away (Not Cartina-just a member of her group)

Be prepared to learn and to be blown away. Our guide at the river was so captivating & knowledgeable my group hung on to every word. After learning this history from school, church, relatives & documentaries it is nothing compared to standing where it went down. Our guide spoke like a true minister/ professor. I learned so much. I have told all of my loved ones of this experience. One in our group collapsed due to the heat and the employees and our main tour guide took great care & had emergency protocols in place.

A Necessary Experience

Pickup times/locations were confirmed the night before and Jeff and our driver/guide Freedom arrived even a little early so we could promptly get on the road. It was a long ride, about 3 hours, to the slave river. Freedom pointed out places of interest along the way. A stretch of the highway is under construction and unpaved, so we had to take that part slowly and it was very bumpy (a note for those easily car sick). We did stop for a quick breakfast on the way. Once we arrived at the river, a tour was just starting, so we joined it. Our guide there was very knowledgeable and took us through the tour, giving us facts and scenarios along the way so we could put ourselves in our ancestors' positions in our minds. It was a full-circle and reverent experience. Next was another hour and change down the road to Elmina Castle. Another heart-wrenching tour learning about what our ancestors went through before being loaded onto the ships to their new destinations. Once that was done, we ate at the on-site restaurant for lunch. We did quickly stop by the Cape Coast castle area to get a look at the building, but it was getting late, so we got back on the road home. Freedom was a great driver and guide, and answered all of our questions. He also provided some tidbits of knowledge and briefed us at each stop before we exited the vehicle, which was really helpful.

A meaningful experience

This was an amazing and humbling experience. As a descendent of slaves/member of the diaspora, it was quite a meaningful experience to walk barefoot where my ancestors were forced to walk, stand barefoot in the river where they had their last bath, and stand in the dungeons where they were locked before leaving the continent. Words truly can’t do justice to convey the meaningfulness of this experience. The tour guides at each location were absolutely amazing. They were so knowledgeable and shared the history with passion and compassion and reverence to the souls of our ancestors. I know that I will never have another travel-related experience that will top this experience. This tour is an absolute must for members of the diaspora visiting Ghana.

Amazing Experience

This tour started super early but it was necessary! Our guide, Frank, was on time and engaging. He made sure we were good and took photos for our group. He also answered questions we had, even those unrelated to the tour! The trip to the Assin Manso Slave River was humbling. To experience it as well as be well educated about what occurred was very well received by myself and my friends. The tour guide for that portion of the trip was so good! Then we visited both the Elmina and Cape Coast dungeons. It was super emotional to learn of the atrocities my ancestors faced. What they endured was horrific and yet they were not broken. I am honored to have these connections to my roots. Please be aware at the time of this review the roads to the coast were basically non-existent so if you have motion sickness, be prepared! Otherwise, we highly recommend this tour!!!

Rushed, Reckless, and Not as Advertised: A Disappointing Tour

"I have very mixed feelings about this tour. On one hand, the historical significance of the Slave River and Cape Coast Castle was profoundly moving, and the local guides at these sites were excellent. However, the experience was significantly marred by several issues. Two months prior, I booked a private tour for myself and a companion to celebrate my birthday. The day before, Frank contacted me asking if we’d be willing to share our tour and van with three additional American tourists due to "vehicle trouble." While I initially expressed my preference for the private tour I booked, I was assured it would be "taken care of." Unfortunately, the reality was far from what I expected. Instead of Frank, we were picked up by another driver who, regrettably, drove in a manner that was both reckless and alarming. The five-hour journey was filled with high-speed driving, aggressive lane changes, and squeezing between large trucks, making it an incredibly stressful and uncomfortable experience. I felt unwell halfway through. The driver also seemed rushed and pushy, which further detracted from the experience. The driver also was held up at a police checkpoint for 30-minutes because he didn’t have a license on him, and started driving even crazier to make up the time. Upon arrival, we discovered that Frank was indeed driving the other three tourists, who were still included in our tour group, contrary to my understanding of a private booking. This was particularly disappointing as I had booked a private tour well in advance. The tour castle itself felt rushed, further adding to our dissatisfaction. While the historical sites and their local guides were commendable, the overall experience was significantly impacted by the unsafe driving, the lack of a private tour as booked, and the feeling of being rushed. I booked a private experience for my birthday, and that is not what I received. While I understand vehicle issues may arise, the solution felt poorly executed and ultimately diminished the quality of the tour. I hope future bookings are handled with more clarity and consideration for the customer's initial reservation.

Thank you Gabby for leaving this detailed review. We are very sorry for the events that occurred during the tour. We take full responsibility for the driver’s unprofessional behavior and we are working to make sure this doesn’t happen again. We had to outsource a driver because we had a tight schedule. We will vet the drivers well before we put them on the road. For the “private tour” tour, we only provide private transportation when you book for private tour. The tour at the attractions or tour sites are usually group tours and we do not have control over that. We try as much as possible to get private tour for our clients whenever it is possible. Once again thank you for this review as it will help us do better.

An eye opening,...

An eye opening, necessary, and heartbreaking experience. All guides were incredibly knowledgeable and respectful to the enslaved people. Foster made the experience easeful and also shared so many other details. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn about the horrors of slavery and honor the ancestors who suffered and survived.
