3 dages Tigray Churches Tour

booked late the night before with Danakil Depression Tours to do the guided tigray churches tour - they were prompt in sending me a confirmation and giving me updated information on meeting locations. My guide was on time and walked with me from the meeting spot to the , where he purchased our tickets before leading us to the ferry. He respected that I preferred to be quiet and take in the scenery, and answered questions when asked. Unfortunately I don’t remember the name of my mariam kormor guide, however he was incredibly knowledgeable on the history of the caves and gave me a lot of information on each carving we saw. He was also incredibly patient with my struggle of walking up the hill to the caves. Overall a great experience and definitely worth checking out the caves - just be prepared to have to do a lot of walking/climbing rock mountains to get to the caves (make sure you have good non-slip shoes). There’s also a lot of vendors on the island so it’s worth having cash if you want to buy anything, however some do have card available

Our danakil tour was very memorable, food and accommodation was really nice. Mr. Danakil Depression was our tour Manager, who has taken enough precautions and guidance to us, since all are Senior Citizens, as well as the untoward situations prevailing in danakil.

We had a great 3 day family (2 adults, 2 teenagers) trip organized by Mickey our guide was getachew Asking to be picked up from Axum, we had envisaged to see a few of the lesser known churches on the way to Hawzen. We were told that this wasn't a good idea as the roads there were bad- but driving to Hawzen through the Agame mountains was worthwhile in itself. Getachew had booked us into Vision hotel- a choice we were happy with (apart from the complete lack of WiFi during our stay). We visited Maryam & Daniel Korkor on the first afternoon, which set the tone for what's to come. Next morning Abuna Gebre Mikael, then a lovely walk to Papaseit Maryam in the afternoon. The highlight of Abuna Yemata was kept for the last day, before we were driven to Mekele. We effectively had a customised trip and were very happy with the choice of churches, hotel and food made for us. Therefore we can only recommend Mickey and Getachew, they were extremely friendly and provided little surprises like taking us to the local market in Hawzen, trying to teach us the local way to dance etc. Next time we're in the area we book to see them again!
