We had the best experience doing the jungle trek with our amazing and friendly guides Bima and Zaka!! They made sure we were well looked after, safe and we had all the time we wanted looking at lots of wild life in an ethical way. We never felt rushed. The food they prepared for us was of very high quality with lots of different options at night. The trip exceeded our expectations! For sure our highlight of our Sumatra journey! A special shout out to our wonderful main guide Bima who went the extra distance looking after us even after the trek!! Highly recommend this company as well for transport, accomodation, laundry service, cooking course and other excursions like village tour and Barastagi. Everything was well organised and of high quality. The food and drinks in their nice riverside restaurant are very tasty as well. We never wanted to go anywhere else. Thanks to all the smiley, friendly and fun staff we met, who made us feel at home! A special place and people, that we didn’t want to leave!!
5 DAY / 4 NIGHT TREK This was, hands down, one of the most incredible experiences of our lives. From the moment I booked directly with the company, the service was impeccable. Dwi was an absolute superstar, providing meticulous details, packing lists, and a seamless, crystal-clear payment plan that left us feeling completely prepared. Everything was organized beautifully. The hotel they arranged for us was gorgeous—I highly recommend staying there the night before your trek to rest up. Once the journey began, we were blown away. On day one alone, we were blessed to see six orangutans! The scenery throughout was simply out of this world. While the trekking is wonderfully challenging, regular refreshing dips in the river were the perfect way to cool off. What truly elevated this trip, though, was the extraordinary team. Our guides, Hari and Erawan, were phenomenal. Safety was their absolute priority, and whenever the terrain got tough, I knew I was in the safest, most capable hands. Beyond their expertise, they kept our spirits high with their fabulous singing! And the food? Absolutely world-class. Our incredibly talented chefs, Ali and Alan, carried all the food and heavy equipment through the jungle for five days straight—a feat of sheer strength I deeply admired. Every single day, we were spoiled with fresh fruit, tea, coffee, and biscuits. Each evening, they would miraculously whip up a massive spread of diverse, delicious dishes. Their hospitality was unmatched. Every afternoon when we arrived at camp, the team immediately served us refreshments by the river before building our bamboo shelters from scratch. Their "guest-first" mentality was present in every single moment. Jungle trekking and camping are inherently rustic, but this team turned it into a 5-star luxury experience. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. It is a core memory that both my son and I will treasure forever.
We had an amazing 2-day/1-night jungle trekking experience! Our guides, Idris and Riki, were absolutely fantastic. They were incredibly friendly, always there to help when needed, and had extensive knowledge about the jungle, wildlife, and nature. They made us feel safe throughout the trek and taught us so much along the way. We couldn’t have asked for better guides. Highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting the jungle! 🐒
We stayed in the jungle for one night and two days, and it was amazing. We saw orangutans, lots of monkeys, and met great people from all over who came to Bukit Lawang. Definitely recommend it. Special thanks to Idris (who is more then ready to be a tour guide😉) & Riki!!
We did the 2 day 1 night trek and what an amazing experience ♥️ Our guides, Bob and Ryan, were a joy to be with with and extremely knowledgeable. We saw many primates including Orangutan, Thomas Leaf Monkey and pigtail Macaque. The food was very tasty, thank you chef, and presented beautifully by Ryan. The trek itself was quite challenging at times, be prepared to sweat a lot! Overall, an experience we will not forget!
Really great experience! Sumatra Orangutan Explore involves the entire village of Bukit Lawang in their success (accommodation, cooking classes...), the trek in the jungle is incredible. We saw many orangutans and not just ... They planned to wear light clothing covered for the jungle because it is quite hot. Great atmosphere throughout the village. Thank you to the entire team!
Amazing experience. The two days were amazing, the team, the staff, the food, the respect for the jungle and the animals. Special thanks to our guides that were the absolute best : Zuan, Nico and the cook Anto. They did their best to find the monkeys and to always make us laugh. I recommand 100%.
This company is the best! Our guides Nico and Juan and chef Anto were amazing! Communication with the company was easy and the trek was more than I could ever have expected. Nature and wildlife are unpredictable and they were prepared for anything and I felt so safe and taken care of. Our guides were so fun, entertaining, knowledgeable, very professional, respectful to the animals, environment and prepared the most delicious snacks and meals at just the right time! We were lucky to see many orangutans, gibbons, horn bills and so much more. We camped next to the river each night and I enjoyed swimming and relaxing while chef Anto prepared a yummy dinner every night. I highly recommend you only use this company because everything is so well coordinated and they put make much effort to ensure it’s unforgettable. Plus rafting the river on the last day was exciting and refreshing after all the work we put in. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
Our 2-day, 1-night jungle trek with Sumatra Orangutan Explore was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. We traveled as a family of four (two adults and two children aged 12 and 14), and it was the perfect adventure for us. Right from the start, the logistics were seamless. We were picked up from the airport in a really comfortable, modern car with great AC. Our driver, Derek, was fantastic! Just a quick tip for anyone booking: it can take up to 5 hours to drive to Bukit Lawang from the airport, so definitely factor that travel time into your plans. When Derek dropped us off in Bukit Lawang, the company had organized a bunch of colleagues to drive us and our bags up to our accommodation in the village by scooter. Because the village roads are too narrow for cars, this was essential, incredibly helpful, and super fun! Our trekking guide, Muss, and assistant, Rian, were incredible—so warm, genuinely friendly, and highly attentive. They even helped us move our suitcases between accommodation in the village when needed. Throughout the trek, they kept us very well-fed with simple, abundant, and really delicious food at multiple stops, including plenty of fresh fruit. Whenever the uphill or downhill terrain became a bit too much for us, Muss and Rian patiently helped us every single step of the way. They put in such hard physical work to look after us, and we highly recommend tipping the guides, assistants, and river tubing crew—they truly deserve to be rewarded. What we appreciated most was their deep respect for the environment. They constantly emphasized the need to respect the jungle, reminding us to pack out all waste and to keep a respectful distance from the wildlife. They beautifully reminded us that we are the interlopers into the jungle, not the animals. Because of this ethical approach, we were able to enjoy an amazing variety of wildlife up close but safely, including incredible wild orangutans, Thomas's leaf monkeys, young monkeys, monitor lizards, and beautiful dragonflies. Quick tip for future trekkers, highly recommend wearing long-sleeved tops and trousers, and tucking your trousers into your socks because of ground leeches! The campsite was exactly what we were looking for: basic but comfortable, with the huge bonus of a beautiful river right beside it where we could cool down and refresh ourselves. We also fortunately had no issues with mosquitoes. Like many, we had some initial worries about the drinking water, but it was fully filtered and brought up to the camp for us (with more filtered water provided on the second day), which was a huge relief. Having a sitting toilet in the jungle was another surprising luxury. The day before our trek, there was a really big storm that caused the rivers to rise by around 3 meters. The guides were incredibly professional and told us in advance that safety always comes first; if the river stayed that high on our second day, we wouldn't be doing the tubing. Thankfully, the water level dropped very quickly, but we really appreciated their transparent, safety-first approach. Because we were quite tired after a full first day, Muss and Rian thoughtfully tailored the second day to our energy levels. We walked down the river and returned via the plantation, which was a much easier, relaxed route. To top off the adventure, we traveled back on river tubes at the end of the second day. It felt really safe, lifejackets were fully provided, and our tubing captain, Iain, performed a total feat of strength carrying the massive tubes all the way up the river path on his back! We cannot recommend Muss, Rian, Derek, Iain, and the rest of the team enough. If you are looking for a professional, accommodating, and unforgettable jungle experience in Bukit Lawang, this is it!
Three days of adventure in a beautiful jungle, encounters with 100% wild orangutans. So many surprises during our trek; we had an amazing time, respecting the jungle and the animals. Recommended without hesitation.
