One day is exactly enough for the whole estate if you get the order right — palace first while everyone else is still queueing, gardens when the light is best, Trianon after noon when it opens. Here is the plan, with the best-rated tours to book.

Morning: the palace
Take the 9am slot. The State Apartments and the Hall of Mirrors are almost quiet for the first hour, and a guided tour enters by the group door.
Midday: the gardens
Walk the central axis to the Apollo Fountain, then pick up a bike or a golf cart at the Grand Canal — the far end of the estate is 2 km away.
Afternoon: Trianon and town
The Trianon domain opens at noon; give the Queen's Hamlet an hour. Finish in town at the Marché Notre-Dame rather than at the palace café.
