Sintra Day Trip from Lisbon: Pena Palace, Regaleira & the Coast

Sintra is the day trip everyone takes from Lisbon, and for good reason — a candy-coloured palace on a mountaintop, a gothic estate riddled with tunnels, and the wild cliffs of Cabo da Roca, all within 30 km of the city. Here is how to structure the perfect Sintra day, plus the best-rated tours that handle the tickets and hills for you.

At a glance

  1. 1Pena Palace at opening
  2. 2Quinta da Regaleira & the well
  3. 3Lunch & travesseiros in the old town
  4. 4Cabo da Roca & Cascais

Morning: Pena Palace before the crowds

Aim for the first entry slot at the Pena Palace, around 9:30am, when the terraces are quiet and the light on the red-and-yellow towers is at its best. Entry is by timed ticket and summer slots sell out days ahead, so book in advance — or choose a tour with the palace ticket already included. Give yourself about two hours for the state rooms, the ramparts and a stretch of the surrounding park.

Midday: Quinta da Regaleira and the old town

Downhill from Pena, the Quinta da Regaleira is Sintra's strangest sight — a neo-Gothic estate laced with grottoes, hidden tunnels and the famous 27-metre Initiation Well that spirals into the earth. Plan around 90 minutes, then walk into the old town for lunch and a warm travesseiro (almond pastry) from Piriquita, the bakery that has made them since 1862.

Afternoon: Cabo da Roca and Cascais

In the afternoon, head 25 minutes west to Cabo da Roca, the windswept lighthouse cliffs at the westernmost point of mainland Europe — bring a jacket, even in August. From there the coast road runs down to Cascais, a former fishing village turned elegant seaside town, for a stroll around the marina and an ice cream before the 40-minute drive back to Lisbon.

Tour or train?

The train from Rossio station reaches Sintra in 40 minutes, but then you face long queues for the 434 hill bus and separate timed tickets for each sight. A full-day tour from Lisbon — typically from around €75–€95 with Pena entry included — links Pena, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais in one loop, which is very hard to replicate on public transport in a single day.

A day in Sintra — FAQ

Can you see Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira in one day?
Yes — do Pena at opening and Regaleira around midday, and you can still fit in Cabo da Roca and Cascais in the afternoon. It works because the two main sights are 10 minutes apart; the key is booking the first Pena time slot.
Do I need to book Pena Palace tickets in advance?
Yes. Pena uses timed-entry tickets and the best morning slots sell out days ahead in high season. Most full-day Sintra tours include the palace ticket, which solves this for you.
Is a guided Sintra tour better than the train?
For a first visit, usually yes. The train is cheap, but the sights are spread across steep hills and the 434 bus queues eat up hours. A tour links Pena, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais in one day — a route that is impractical on public transport.
